I am an ex-teacher of Modern Foreign Languages, having left teaching in July 2018 in order to finish my book “Strictly Positive Teaching”. I wrote the book as a response to the spiralling problems of mental health in our schools. I believe that a tweak in the way we teach in our classrooms could effect great positive change. Over my years in the classroom I have refined the concept of Positive Teaching, which started as a set of behaviour management techniques, and I now regard it as a philosophical approach which can be applied to all areas of school life, from planning lessons to school leadership.
I have had leadership posts in Pastoral middle management and in Teaching and Learning and I mentored PGCE students and NQTs as part of my role. I hugely enjoy working with new teachers and PGCE students, and I have targeted my book at colleagues who are new to the profession, because I believe that the best way to change the education system and the way we educate our young people in the classroom is by asking teachers new to the profession to try it out. I’ve been talking to many of my colleagues in school and to the PGCE students and NQTs I meet about my approach, and many of them have used it to great effect.
I am unbelievably passionate about spreading the word about Strictly Positive Teaching. Now I am keen to share my ideas with as many teachers as I can, but particularly those at the start of their careers, in the hope that they might find it as useful and rewarding as I do.
